This was a busy time for the disciples, earthquakes, angels, empty tomb; and Jesus, who died on Friday in full view of many witnesses, has somehow come back to life. Jesus was
first seen by Mary Magdalene, and then by her alone with a faithful group of women, then He broke bread with Cleophas and another disciple a few miles down
the road. Fear was in the hearts of the disciples, they were afraid of the high priests, and rightly so. We can assume that they were next on the
hit list, belief was causing fear in the high priests; disbelief was causing fear in the disciples. Fear steals the peace from our hearts.
As the Text begins in verse 19 we enter into the room of a house somewhere within the walls of Jerusalem. This could be the very first Sunday evening Church service taking place, but you would have to search pretty hard to find faith in that same room. Jesus surprises His disciples in that upstairs room, after all, He’s supposed to be dead! But He comes among them alive again, more alive than He was before. The disciples could not believe that He was alive they saw what had happen to Him on Friday.
And now Jesus showed up again without opening the door; He stood in the midst of them saying “Peace be unto you.” It was as if He was saying to them don’t be afraid. I am not upset with you because of your unbelief. Jesus knew that His disciples was afraid, He also knew that they were feeling guilty because they had let Him down at a most venerable moment. But Jesus was saying I’ve come to let you know that it’s time to come out of hiding and be about my Father’s business.
People are talking about peace, protesting for peace, putting up signs all over the place promoting peace, but no one can bring about peace like Jesus does. Jesus says: that He must work the work of Him who has sent Him, while it was still day. When He was only twelve years old He had to remind His mother: “that He must be about His Father’s business.” In His Great discourse on the Mount of Olives He warned us that we will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but we are not to be trouble these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. He saying to us keep on working.
God is saying to us to work while it is still day, do not be afraid, we must be about our Father’s business. We must avoid the things that interfere with being about our Father’s business. The night is coming; therefore, we are to seek peace with all man. True peace can only be found in Jesus. Until Jesus spoke peace to them, the disciples were filled with fear, and the sorrow that accompanies it.
Fear stopped us from working in the Church, from taking positions in the church, because we are afraid of being criticized, we are afraid that we are not qualified, we do not know enough. Fear convinces us that we do not want to be bothered. Fear causes us to be easily deceived by politicians, by scientists, by pharmaceuticals ads, and by TV news. But you must know that God has not given us a spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. (2 Timothy 1: 7)
Jesus tells us there is no need for us to be afraid, we are to work the work of the Kingdom, and He died that we might be able to finish the work that He started. He tells the disciples and us who believe; as the Father sent Him “even so send I you.” He has equipped us to work the work of the kingdom; Jesus says received ye the Holy Spirit. It is the Spirit that empowers us to serve, to work, and to be about our Father’s business.
So if the Spirit of God is in the church, (the church is you) then church has been given the Spirit of power, of love, and of a sound mind. Therefore, we have the power to put the devil under our feet, when he tells us we can’t; the Spirit of God says: “I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.” When he tells us that we don’t have: the Spirit of God says “God will supply all our needs according to His riches in glory; when he says we can’t participate in giving: the Spirit of God says “Give and it will be given back to you, good measure, press down, shaken together, and running over shall men pour into your bosom, for the measure you give will be the measure you get back. (Luke 6: 38) When the enemy comes and tells us that we are defeated: the Spirit of God say we are more than conquers; when he says that we are alone: The spirit say that nothing will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus.
When you allow Jesus into your heart, His spirit begin to work on you, His thoughts start to become your thought. “So send I you”, if you are only coming to church on Sunday morning and you are not involves in any work of building the Kingdom; you need to pray and ask God to identify the areas He want you to work. We must be about our Father’s business.
We are soldiers in the army of the Lord and He has equipped us to be about His business, time is running out, whether you believe it or not. As Jesus commissioned His disciples, “even so send I you.”
